What Have I Learned After Practicing Stretching With A Coach | Mistakes To Avoid When Working On Flexibility

So hi again.

Things I am about to tell you here is only my experience. I believe someone needs a coach and it is more comfortable to work out with a teacher. But I am done with any kind of personal trainer and here is why:

I started practicing stretching when I was 22 years old. It is late for a person who never danced, never been flexible and never ever done any exercising except some running in school.

Don't get me wrong. If you are 30+ years old thinking about starting gymnastic - do it! I mean it is old for this kind of stretching MY trainer is practicing.

Maybe you want to hear something about me before we get started? I have never EVER been flexible (I know I told this before) but I want you to understand how bad things were. When I was about 6 my mom brought me to the dance class where everyone but me could do splits or anything related to this. I was able to do nothing. I was kind of overweight so maybe partially it was a problem (I don't believe it, do you?) So I quit and my legs have never been at any dance classes since then.

So back to my story. There is 22 y o me wanting to get my splits so bad doing everything wrong (even though I have watched tons of videos I couldn't do anything the right way).

I found a stretching group and was really happy about it. My coach (a 25 y girl who is pole-dancer) is incredibly strong and flexible she is amazing. I don't mind anything about her or the way she is teaching. It is not for me and I finally understood it a year ago.

The problem with my progress was that nobody ever told me that If you want to succeed you have to workout almost every day. If you surf the internet because of it you will find some "advanced" person who has claimed that working out everyday is wrong. It is not you just have to know your body better to understand what works the best for you. My experience says that everyday training is the best in this case. I mean for sure you can not train hard eveyday otherwise you can possibly hurt yourself but hey, can you REALLY exercise hard 7 days a week? I don't think so. Every person has ups and downs and from time to time your body reacts differently on your stretching routine. Knowing your limit is key. I know this feeling when your legs are unable to stretch for months.
My experience with the coach was not good. Every time I went to my class I felt pain because of the way I was stretching.

If you're a grown man/woman and you want to start gymnastic/poledance/ballet/stretching everything that is related to flexibility the main thing is to understand that you are not a child anymore. Almost all the stretching trainers help you with your progress kind of harsh. They push your through your limits making you want to die of pain. It is bad. Everyone would say you - no pain, no game. It is true but the pain from stretching and the pain they provide is different. Know you limit! You have to be comfortable sitting in your split or whatever. A partner will never feel your pain or how do you feel. In fact, no one but you do.
We all are different our ability to do things are different. The same with gymnastic. Muscle mobility is different from person to person and that's why someone hurts during the training process and other one does not.

Great things never came from comfort zones or how I started practicing yoga alone

The first thing is the limit of your pain. This is the main reason why I decide to stretch alone. Furthermore, I've met a girl who has taught me how to stretch alone without anyone's help and it was a miracle for my poor body that hurt thousands of times by then. Maybe only because of this I finally stopped excruciating myself. I believed that I couldn't ever get better in my passion without anyone who would push and hurts me.

My workout was about warm up and stretching. The first half of training I hated my girl-coach and the second half I hated her even more because she wasn't able to stretch my body properly and it was painful as hell.

Why I decided that it was more than one reason to quit my group class? When I practice alone my warm-up is not that long and stressful as well as my stretching routine is less painful than it was then. I noticed that I couldn't ever get my split or anything else without proper warm-up last year because my muscles weren't ready for it. So this is a reason two. We are not in a ballet class and not going to go to Olimpic Games, right? All we needed is just to get better in things we like so that's why (imho) we do not need this exhausting warm-up. Nevertheless, your muscles need to be warm before doing yoga so don't get me wrong, always stretch your body before doing all kinds of exercising as a split and so on. This is it. My poor injured body said me to stop and it was a good decision to start to listen to it and learn the best ways to exercise alone.

What motivates me to keep going. Things I've learned from stretching with a coach

So many things to say but maybe I will explain how my stretching routing changed since then in other posts. What became different and what stays the same.

In the end, I want to say that no matter when you decided to start gymnastics it's up to you what class to choose what trainer to listen. You can do it with online guys and girls or with an ex-ballerina (or whatever) in your city. And do not listen to anyone who would tell you that it is late for you to start. It is never too late.

If you decide to start - do it constantly and take yourself time to get better in things you want to get better.

Hope you are ready for new adventure. Bye.
